The brilliant acting and directing in these first ten-minutes were something I found quite special because there's no dialogue and the two actresses must tell us everything we need to know with their eyes and body gestures. In fact, I'd say that if the film doesn't grab you in the first ten-minutes then it's probably best to hit the stop button because I feel the opening sequences are the most important in the film in terms of getting you involved for everything that's going to follow.
WHERE IS THE CORK IN I SPY SPOOKY MANSION MOVIE
This is one crazy movie from start to finish and I think it's safe to say that many people will hate this thing and probably won't make it through to the end.

The version I watched was the uncut one and whenever rape and incest are the most normal things going on you know you're watching something completely different and strange. SECRET CEREMONY is apparently available in a couple versions and most point out that the alternate, studio cut of the film is pretty bad but I'm not sure what the differences are. The Farrow character thinks that Taylor is her dead mother and Taylor sees that the girl resembles her dead daughter and things just grow more bizarre from here. Secret Ceremony (1969) *** (out of 4) Extremely bizarre psychological thriller from director Jospeh Losey about the strange relationship between a prostitute (Elizabeth Taylor) and a young woman (Mia Farrow) living alone in a large house. Nor will director Joseph Losey be acclaimed for this one in the future. Secret Ceremony will never rate on the top of any of the three main players film resume. Those were two legendary drinkers, Mitchum and Burton and they really enjoyed night after night seeing who could drink who under. What he did enjoy was the company of Liz Taylor and her roistering husband Richard Burton. Part of the reason he got it was Mitchum's uncanny ear for dialect and he goes in and out of an English accent which was proof positive of his indifference to the film. It only involved a few scenes for Mitchum who sauntered through the part rather indifferently. According to Lee Server's fine book on Robert Mitchum, old rumple eyes got the part on the recommendation of Roddy McDowell to his friend Liz Taylor. And Mitchum is a big part of the cause of Mia's psychosis. Then there is the sinister Robert Mitchum who replete with beard that makes him look like a leprechaun on weed, who is her estranged stepdad. To them Taylor says she's the American cousin of Mia's mom. Two of whom are aunts Peggy Ashcroft and Pamela Brown. And as Mia is one wealthy heiress Liz is thinking she's hit the jackpot. Since Liz lost a child herself that works out well because the two at first fill a symbiotic need for family. Elizabeth Taylor plays an aging prostitute for whom Mia Farrow gets fixated on, thinking Liz is her mother. But he came up short with Secret Ceremony of which I still am trying to figure out just what was happening.

Joseph Losey who had blacklist troubles in the USA, came over to the UK and did such great films as The Servant and King & Country.
